Since the 1980's, there is a growing production
of Ragtime disc recordings, especially in the "cradle" of this music, the USA.
Here we've chosen to highlight some Ragtime recordings made by French artists or published by French discographic labels.
FROM CAKE-WALK TO RAGTIME
double CD Frémeaux & Associés FA 067.
Old recordings selections mainly Europeans
and French which demonstrate the passage from Cake - Walk to Early Ragtime, which have been
chosen and commented by French specialist Olivier BRARD in a very good little booklet (in French)
containing a lot of very interesting informations.
ORIGINAL RAGTIME
Played by Claude BOLLING
Claude Bolling
is certainly the most well - known French contemporary Jazz artist in the world.
He's played with some of the best jazz musicians of all times, and was a close friend of Duke
ELLINGTON and Earl HINES. BOLLING is also a great contributor of
Ragtime rebirth here in France. He's recorded and composed many Ragtime pieces.
This disc presents some ragtime numbers,
classic and novelty played with taste and energy.
RAGTIME Vol.1 1897/1919
Jazz Archives No120 159052
Like Frémeaux & Associés CD, this one
proposes an anthology of old recordings, contening two 78 rpm discs of rare piano solos from the
early 20th century.
A SCOTT JOPLIN'S TRIBUTE
Emmanuel Caruana (2009)
Emmanuel "Ragtime Manu" Caruana proposes a classic rags selection; CD
is avalaible from the artist (theragtime.free.fr.)
JELLY ROLL MORTON Piano Rolls 1924 - 1928
Média 7
Two well-known French Jelly Roll Morton
specialists, Philippe BAUDOUIN and Jacques SCHNECK have realized with the help of
Douglas HEFFER, pianolist and player piano expert, a wonderful CD recorded with a Steinway & Sons piano.
This disc is without doubt a main reference,
and the recording and the roll pumping are really better than other old recordings (made for
example by Biograph).
ZARANA
Jean-Marc Andrès (banjo) and Philippe Yvron (piano) Co Prod Music
Features original Ragtime
compositions for piano and banjo. Well played and really refreshing.
LUCCETINA
Jean-Marc Andrès 2005
This recent disc
is a blend of Banjo Ragtime with waltzes and Novelty styles.
Available on CDBaby.
RAGTIME PIANO VOL. I Fabrice EULRY
Passavant Music 2242
Recorded in 2008, this recent and excellent CD by
Fabrice EULRY proposes 19 different pieces from the
Classic Ragtime, Novelty and Contemporary repertory played with energy on an old upright and Steinway grand pianos.
RAGTIME
Yannick SINGERY 1975
What a pity that this old 33rpm disc is not
reissued. It is the best Ragtime recording made by a French artist. SINGERY was a trad jazz pianist,
with a true love for MORTON and Ragtime music. As a result, all tracks are played with
musicality and originality, with personnal and beautiful renditions from the original sheet music.
Again, this recording has been produced by French specialist
and archivist Jean-Christophe AVERTY.
LE RAGTIME de Scott Joplin à
Claude Bolling
Par le CONCERT ARBAN ARION ARN 64022
Another excellent CD realized by this
excellent brass quintet.
INTEGRALE DES OEUVRES DE SCOTT JOPLIN Pietro Galli Ed. Cassiopée; 15 Av. Montaigne Paris
Although GALLI is a classically-trained pianist
of reputation, he's chosen to record the entire piano catalog of
Scott JOPLIN's works.
With his tasteful and beautiful piano
technique and sound, Galli have succeded in recreating a early 20th C. Ragtime atmosphere!
Truly a very good Ragtime CD! (3 CD boxed set)
RAGTIME
Benjamin Intartaglia
FSTS 200
SWING, RAG & BLUES Philippe Bas
Not exactly Ragtime but in reality this
recordings are Stride, Blues and Boogie original compositions. However they are all very good
and seems to be like cutting contest virtuoso pieces! (Just see Philippe play these numbers,
and you'll be impressed!!)
Unfortunately, it's not distributed but
only for sale directly from the artist, Philippe BAS.
"FROM RAGTIME TO SWING"
Philippe Audibert Trio
ALF-11954
Composed of 19 nice tracks, this CD is partially based on beautiful renditions of
rags by Scott JOPLIN, Jelly Roll MORTON et Benjamin INTARTAGLIA.
HOMMAGE A FATS WALLER Jean-Carl Simonetti JSC 001
Jean-Carl SIMONETTI, non-professionnal stride
pianist, recorded and produced in 2000 a disc, HOMMAGE A FATS WALLER which will interest all listeners
who are particularly interested in Stride music. This CD mainly features Fats' compositions, plus one
original by K. O Eckland, all played with great care and musicality. You can order this record
directly from Jean-Carl SIMONETTI (cf. the LINKS page).
RAGTIME Marc Bercovitz
Another Ragtime LP, produced in limited edition
by le Petit-Journal Saint-Michel at the beginning of the 70's and which is not available, played by
the unknown artist Marc BERCOVITZ.
This record has virtually no interest, because
piano rags are performed as written and BERCOVITZ piano playing is dull, even if he plays with
good little technique and accuracy. Recorded live during one evening, one can hear people clapping their
hands politely on the first and second track, but the audience quickly falls in a deep sleep in the other
tracks...
