www.ragtime-france.net has some hosting problems preventing us to make regular updates. The site has been constantly growing over the years but now the hosting quota is reached. As a result, we have to stop creating any "big" update containing huge mp3 or pdf files...

Minor changes in the HISTORICAL text has been made, and the BONUS page has been updated with 2 new piano roll transcriptions. Older files are still in place for the moment, but some of them have been modified into "lighter" files that don't exceed 2MB each:

11/17/2009

CLASSICAL page modified with "Cake Walk de Salon" and 3 new piano roll transcriptions in the BONUS page.

08/17/2009

A new composer has been referenced in the CLASSICAL page. Justin CLERICE, author of many dance and ballet music, also wrote numerous piano solo compositions.

The BONUS page has been updated with 3 piano roll transcriptions.

The Player Piano and Mechanical Music Exchange has released one new hand played piano roll! It's OLD TIME RAG, composed and played by Benjamin INTARTAGLIA.

The CONTEMPORARY composers page has been updated with some short examples of Fabrice EULRY's Ragtime music. He's involved for a long time in participating in an outstanding event regularly organized in various French cities, "la Nuit du Ragtime", that features the well known Claude BOLLING.

The BONUS page has been updated with 3 piano roll transcriptions.

06/07/2009

The BONUS page has been updated with 3 piano roll transcriptions. There is a medley of various piano rolls recorded by different artists on the famous W C HANDY theme SAINT LOUIS BLUES, which has been first published in 1914 with this surprising sub-title: "the most widely known ragtime composition" (!) Another piano roll of interest is the famous CHICAGO STOMP by James BLYTHE, not a strictly Ragtime piece, but of historical interest since it was one of the first Boogie Woogie piano solo recorded (1924)

Two foreign composers are removed from the CLASSICAL list. We apologize for presenting Jacob GRIT and John M SCHOUTEN as French composers. Even if both were members of the French SACEM, Ate Van Delden, a trad jazz specialist of The Netherlands precised in an email that GRIT and SCHOUTEN were actually Dutchmen. GRIT, in particular, was even interviewed many years ago by Ate Van Delden who wrote an article on Dutch ragtime pioneers.

Fabrice EULRY presented his new Ragtime piano solo CD during his Friday, may 15th concert at Passavant Studios in Franche Comté. The CD, recorded on an excellent Steinway concert grand features many old and contemporary rags, including Fabrice EULRY's compositions and Benjamin INTARTAGLIA's "Old Time Rag" - this title is going to be available this month in a hand played player piano roll format, too.

New sheet music added to BONUS page!

02/23/2009

The page CLASSICAL is updated with a new composer listed, Charles FLEURONT. His melodious JUMBO RAG, which combines two-step and cake-walk rhythms has been included in PDF format. It's interesting to note that it has been published by a German publisher in central Germany. This country has a very interesting Ragtime history and definitively was a 'Ragtime land' since the the late 19th century.

Benjamin INTARTAGLIA and Renaud PATIGNY in concert (spring 2009):

Two Ragtime events that shouldn't be missed: two Ragtime pianists, Benjamin INTARTAGLIA, France and Renaud PATIGNY, Belgium will play together on two pianos in March, 27th (8 pm) at salle Molière (2 rue d’Aumale, 1070 Bruxelles Anderlecht, Belgium) and May, 10th, (4 pm) at the théâtre du vaudeville (galerie de la reine, Bruxelles, Belgium).

First and foremost, the BONUS page has been updated with 6 new solo piano sheet music. One transcription is one of the most well known piano rolls: MAPLE LEAF RAG by Scott JOPLIN! This roll offers an insight in Scott JOPLIN's playing manner, even if his recording proposes only a light variation of the original MLR score. Please note that instead of the original 2/4 time signature, this transcription proposes a simple, more readable 4/4.

A new composer has been added to the CLASSICAL page, Lucien DENNI, with two PDFs of his compositions.

We wish a happy new year to our visitors!

Due to technical problems, "Le Ragtime français" was closed and not on-line for several days in December. We hope that the modifications we have made will prevent new problems. In any case, the site will last until September 2009.

The BONUS page has been updated with 6 new ragtime solos and one piano roll transcription: TURKEY ON THE STRAW is Percy GRAINGER's recording of the famous American folktune arranged by David GUION who was a noted composer for his Ragtime compositions and Negro Spiritual arrangements. We also include here a PDF of the original 1919 sheet music. And last but not least, hear it acoustically recorded by the Canadian pianist Willie ECKSTEIN [MP3].

12/12/2008

Three new sheet music have been added to the CLASSICAL page. Jean WIENER added to the CLASSICAL list, but without biographical notice for the moment.

Erik SATIE - Ragtime Parade
Jean WIENER - Haarlem et Blues

11/03/2008

A short mp3 illustration of Fabrice EULRY's ragtime music has been added; 'Dauphine Rag' is one of his first composition in the genre.

Please note that Fabrice EULRY will be the protagonist of an important event: the release of his new Ragtime piano solo CD in a few weeks. The last French record of Ragtime music released back was towards 2001, and it wasn't an original recording, but a re-issue of an older one.

All informations are available on the artist's site.

09/21/2008

Two tracks from an old 78rpm was available recently; Clément DOUCET also recorded several piano rolls at the end of the 1920's for PLEYELA, a French player-piano manufacturer.

Two French specialists of mechanical music, Vincent THEBAULT and Douglas HEFFER had searched their respective piano roll collections for DOUCET's piano rolls for a CD recording that has never been realized. But the result is here, and a rollography, completed and revised by Andrew EVANS is available.

We propose 3 mp3 files recorded by Vincent THEBAULT on his Pleyela baby grand:

TELL HER IN THE SPRINGTIME
Pleyela piano roll # 10008 recorded by Clément DOUCET
HALLELUJAH!
Pleyela piano roll # 15035
THAT CERTAIN FEELING
Pleyela piano roll # 15016

The well-known ARC (Ragtime Compendium) list is annually updated, with the addition of all new elements and informations found every year. It's a collective work of census of Ragtime works, and several Ragtime specialist all over the world are contibuting to this huge and oustanding project. Freely available for consultation on its dedicated site, it's during a search for the ARC that a Dutch researcher found two French Ragtime composers that were even not quoted on "le Ragtime français". It's done now, and Emile MARTRON and J. M. SCHOUTEN have their own columns in the CLASSICAL page. Both composers were published by H. B. SMIT, and one complete composition is available in PDF.

A new mp3 file is available for Clément DOUCET's "La Vache dans La Cave" ["the Cow in the Basement": humorous opposition of "the beef on the roof"] which was composed and recorded by himself for Columbia. Soon, we'll add some infos for his well-known friend and piano partner Jean WIENER, who also had a keen interest in every aspects of "syncopated piano".

And last but not least, if you've no knowledge in French language, it's time to regret it, because Alexandre Leroi CORTOT still maintains his wonderful and incredible music blog which could be considered as one of the most interesting, perfectly documented site concerning Novelty, Ragtime and Jazz-related music, (mostly european) actually availabe over the Internet [RAGTIME, NOVELTY & SYNCOPATED PIANO 1920-1930]
